Black History Month

Among other things, the Mark Twain High School decided to decorate their classroom doors to celebrate Black History Month.

One of our students approached me and asked me if she could decorate my office door. I was thrilled about her initiative.

The student took the leadership, planned and executed the decoration of the door. She was motivated and able to work through any obstacles.

The door includes only a few among the many significant African-American Women that had a significant positive impact in a variety of settings. These are their names:

Dr. Eliza Ann Grier (1964-1902) - Physician and first African-American woman licensed to practice medicine in Georgia.

Maya Angelou (1928-2014)  - Poet, singer, memoirist, and civil right activist

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson (b 1946)  - Physicist, inventor

Mary Van Brittan Brown (1922 - 1999)  - Inventor

Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996 ) - Jazz, Vocalist

Dr. Mae Jemison (b 1956) - NASA Astronaut, engineer, physician

Rosa Parks (2013-2005) - Civil right activist

Aretha Franklin (1942-2018) - Singer, songwriter civil right activist, actress, pianist

The door also includes the following quote by Rosa Parks:

I would like to thank our student for putting much effort into doing her part in celebrating Black History Month.
